What is an Activation and how Does It Help Your Brand?

BACK TO BLOG

We live in a world where people are constantly scrolling, skipping and swiping, so the challenge for brands isn’t just getting in front of people anymore. It’s getting them to actually stop, pay attention and feel something.

That’s where brand activations come in as a lever we can pull in marketing!

A brand activation is essentially a campaign, event or experience designed to bring your brand to life and create a more direct connection with your audience. Instead of simply putting a message in front of people, you’re inviting them to become part of it.

That could be a pop-up, giving away flowers in the city town centre (we really did that one!), a sampling event, a clever partnership or collab, an installation, a community experience or something completely unexpected that gets people talking and feeling.

And it doesn’t have to be huge. Some of the best activations are actually quite simple. The key is having an idea that feels relevant to your audience and true to your brand.

Why activations are becoming more important

People have become very good at ignoring marketing (sad face!). We scroll past ads, skip content and tune out anything that feels like everything else we’ve already seen.

Activations work because they create a moment. They make your brand stop feeling like wallpaper.

They give people something to interact with, photograph, share, talk about or remember. Instead of someone simply seeing your marketing, they experience it.

And that matters because people often remember how a brand made them feel long after they’ve forgotten the ad they saw.

What can a brand activation look like?

There really isn’t one formula.

It could be an experiential pop-up, an interactive social campaign, a sponsorship, a local event or a partnership with another brand. The more creative the better!

For regional businesses especially, community activations can be incredibly powerful because word of mouth and local connection already play such a big role in how people choose who they buy from.

The important thing is that the activation makes sense for your audience. They can be a little out of the box but they can’t be completely random!

Don’t sponsor something just because a proposal landed in your inbox, and don’t create an activation simply because everyone else is doing one….

Strategy first, always.

Why they work

Activations can turn awareness into affinity. Okay buzz lightyear, I said affinity, not infinity, what does affinity mean? Affinity means a natural liking and/or attraction.

There is a big difference between someone saying, “I know that brand” and someone saying, “I really like that brand.”

You can buy awareness through advertising, but affinity is usually built through trust, experiences and positive interactions.

A strong activation can also create reach far beyond the people who physically attend. If people photograph it, tag the brand, share it with friends or create content around it, the experience can continue across social media, PR, email and paid campaigns.

That is where activations can become really valuable. Instead of treating them as one isolated marketing tactic, think about how one experience can fuel the rest of your marketing.

Do you need a big budget?

No.

Money can make an idea bigger, but it can’t make a bad idea good. Write that on a bumper sticker!

A small, thoughtful activation designed for the right people can be far more effective than a huge event that nobody really connects with.

Before you start planning, ask yourself three things:

  • what are we trying to achieve?
  • who is this actually for?
  • what do we want people to feel or say afterwards?

Activations aren’t just another piece of advertising. It’s a chance to turn attention into connection and give people a reason to remember your brand.

Thinking of doing one for your brand? Let’s make it strategic.
